Betty and I have been together for over 45 years. We’ve shared laughter, tears, and countless adventures on our little 10-acre property west of Fort Worth. Our land, filled with the gentle companionship of our donkeys, cows, and native white-tailed deer, has always been a source of peace and joy.
However, our lives took a dramatic turn when Betty was diagnosed with Huntington’s disease at the age of 43. It was a devastating blow, a cruel twist of fate that has tested us in ways we never imagined.
Caregiving has been a rollercoaster of emotions. There have been moments of frustration, despair, and sheer exhaustion. The hardest part, without a doubt, has been watching the woman I love deteriorate, both physically and mentally. It’s like losing her piece by piece.
But amidst the challenges, there have also been blessings. The opportunity to care for her, to be her constant companion, has deepened our bond in ways I never thought possible. It’s a privilege, a sacred duty. The most rewarding aspect of caregiving has been witnessing her resilience, her unwavering spirit, even in the darkest of times. Her strength inspires me every day.
My advice to other caregivers is don’t be afraid to ask for help. Whether it’s hiring a home health aide or seeking assistance from family members, friends, and neighbors, don’t hesitate to ask for help when you need it.
