Caregiver Profile: Paula Baughman

My caregiving experience began when my mom and aunt needed help taking care of their dad. I never really had a close relationship with my grandpa. Growing up he was never around. Now, I know about his childhood and his time in the Vietnam War. My grandpa was an ambulance driver and we joke about maybe that is the reason I am a first responder.

The hardest thing about being a caregiver is not getting overwhelmed and taking things to heart when they get upset about someone having to help them.  The most rewarding thing is a closer relationship with your loved one.

Take time to really listen to their stories of life. It provides so much insight into who they are.  What is important is to have love, respect, and empathy.

Being a caregiver has taught me to really listen and a lot of times people are afraid to ask for help. . Through this experience, it has made me listen more closely to people’s needs, which in turn helps me to help others.
