How to Use Fall Detection with Apple Watch

The Importance of Getting Medical Help After a Fall

Falls can be dangerous, especially for older adults or individuals with medical conditions. Seeking immediate medical attention after a fall is crucial to ensure there are no hidden injuries, such as fractures or internal bleeding, which may not be immediately apparent. Timely intervention can prevent complications and promote a quicker recovery. Modern technology, like the Apple Watch, can play a vital role in this process by detecting falls and facilitating prompt communication with emergency services.

How to Use Fall Detection with Apple Watch

If your Apple Watch detects a hard fall, it can help connect you to emergency services if needed. Here’s how it works:

When a hard fall is detected on an Apple Watch SE, Apple Watch Series 4 or later, or Apple Watch Ultra or later, the device taps your wrist, sounds an alarm, and displays an alert. You can choose to contact emergency services or dismiss the alert by pressing the Digital Crown, tapping “Close” in the upper-left corner, or tapping “I’m OK.”

If your Apple Watch detects movement, it waits for your response and won’t automatically call emergency services. However, if it detects that you’ve been immobile for about a minute, it will make the call automatically.

After the call ends, your watch sends a message to your emergency contacts with your location, informing them that your watch detected a hard fall and dialed emergency services. Your emergency contacts are retrieved from your Medical ID.

In cases where there are multiple emergency numbers in your country or region, your Apple Watch will automatically choose a single emergency number to dial.

If you have an iPhone 14 or later, Fall Detection notifications to emergency services may be communicated by the Emergency SOS via satellite system when you’re outside of cellular and Wi-Fi coverage, provided that Emergency SOS via satellite is available in your area.

Using fall detection on your Apple Watch is a straightforward process that can provide peace of mind and potentially save lives. Ensure your Medical ID is up to date and familiarize yourself with the fall detection features on your Apple Watch to maximize its benefits.
