Caregiver's Guide: Packing for a Day Out

What do you take when you and your care receiver go out for the day?

Maybe it is a short trip to the grocery store, eating at a restaurant, or several stops running routine errands.

Essentials

  • Medications:
Bring all prescribed medications, including any over-the-counter medications they regularly use. Consider a small, portable pill organizer for easy management.
  • Medical Records:
Carry a copy of their medical history, including any relevant diagnoses, allergies, and emergency contacts.
  • Water and Snacks:
Pack plenty of water and easy-to-eat snacks to keep them hydrated and energized throughout the day.  And double all of that to include YOU.
  • Comfortable Clothing and Shoes:
Ensure both of you wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing and supportive shoes appropriate for the activity and weather.
  • Personal Care Items:
Pack essentials like hand sanitizer, tissues, wet wipes, and a small first-aid kit.
  • Mobility Aids:
If they use a walker, cane, or wheelchair, bring them along.
  • Weather-Appropriate Gear:
Check the forecast and take an umbrella, hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, a portable fan, or any other gear they may need.

Comfort and Support

  • Pillows and Blankets:
If they are prone to fatigue or discomfort, pack a small pillow and blanket for added comfort.
  • Entertainment:
Bring along a favorite book, magazine, or music player to keep them entertained and engaged.
  • Communication Devices:
Ensure they have their phone, hearing aids (if applicable), and any other assistive devices for communication.
  • Emergency Contact Information:
Ensure you have a list of emergency contacts, including family, friends, and medical professionals, readily available.
  • Identification:
Carry their identification, such as a driver’s license or medical alert bracelet, in case of emergencies.

Safety and Accessibility

  • Accessible Transportation:
Consider the accessibility of the destination and choose transportation accordingly. Ensure the vehicle is comfortable and safe for the elderly person.
  • Rest Stops:
Plan for rest stops and breaks throughout the day to avoid overexertion and potential discomfort.
  • Emergency Plan:
Discuss a plan for emergencies and make sure everyone involved knows what to do in case of unexpected situations.
  • Backup Plan:
Have a backup plan in case of unforeseen circumstances, such as weather changes or sudden illness.
  • Consider a Companion:
If possible, consider taking a companion or caregiver to help with assistance and support.

Consider these factors

  • Health Condition:
Tailor the outing to the individual’s specific needs and limitations.
  • Medication Schedule:
Plan the outing around medication times and ensure they have access to water and any necessary snacks to take with their medications.
  • Physical Limitations:
Choose destinations and activities that are safe and manageable for the elderly person’s physical capabilities.
  • Mental and Emotional Well-being:
Engage in activities that stimulate their mind and boost their spirits.
  • Accessibility of the Destination:
Ensure the location is accessible with ramps, elevators, and appropriate seating.

By carefully planning and preparing, you can ensure a safe, enjoyable, and memorable day out for your elderly loved one.
